This Medicinal Cannabis Compounding consists of 7 modules outlined below:
Module 1: Introduction to the Extemporaneous Compounding Course on Botanicals: With Emphasis on Medicinal Cannabis
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Provide a brief review of the history of herbal medicine and its relevance to pharmacy; with examples
- Understand the different types of herbal products available on the local and international market.
- Discuss the different types of preparation of botanical preparations, teas, tinctures, isolates, standardized extracts and more
- Outline the different ways botanicals can affect a few disease states and body systems
Module 2: Introduction to Cannabis as Medicine
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Understand the history of the Cannabis plant as medicine, including its traditional uses and modern applications.
- Describe the botanical features of the Cannabis plant, with a focus on the leaves and trichomes.
- Identify and discuss the chemical composition of the plant, with an emphasis on cannabinoids and terpenes.
- Explain the chemistry of endocannabinoids and synthetic cannabinoids.
- Discuss potential contaminants in Cannabis and their impact on health.
Module 3: The Pharmacology of Medicinal Cannabis
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Understand the function and importance of the endocannabinoid system in the human body.
- Explain the mechanism of action of cannabinoids, including THC and CBD.
- Describe the pharmacokinetics of Cannabis, focusing on absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion.
- Compare different dosing strategies and dosage forms for medicinal Cannabis.
- Identify key pharmacist counselling points for patients using Cannabis as therapy.
- Understand and discuss the safety issues and risks associated with medicinal Cannabis use.
Module 4: Indications and Dosing of Medicinal Cannabis
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Understand and outline conventional treatment protocols for 20 specific disease conditions.
- Discuss the level of evidence associated with the treatment of these disease conditions.
- Identify potential contraindications and drug interactions of medicinal Cannabis with conventional treatments.
- Provide disease-specific counselling points for pharmacists to advise patients using medicinal Cannabis.
Module 5: The Legal Environment for the Handling of Medicinal Cannabis
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Understand the laws governing medicinal Cannabis compounding in Jamaican pharmacies.
- Explain the roles and responsibilities of the Ministry of Health & Wellness and the Cannabis Licensing Authority in regulating medicinal Cannabis.
- Identify the role of pharmacists in extemporaneous compounding versus large-scale manufacturing of medicinal Cannabis products.
- Outline the documentation required when dispensing medicinal Cannabis prescriptions.
Module 6: Protocols for Extemporaneous Compounding - Overseas Experience
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Understand the protocols for purchasing Cannabis products from licensed growers.
- Explain the procedures for receiving, storing, recording, and preparing medicinal Cannabis products.
- Describe the process for dispensing Cannabis products on a physician's order.
- Discuss the current procedures in the U.S. Cannabis industry, focusing on medicinal Cannabis compounding practices.
Module 7: Practical Demonstrations on How to Prepare Selected Dosage Forms
At the end of this seminar/workshop, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate the preparation of Cannabis stock solutions for extemporaneous compounding in a pharmacy setting.
- Discuss how to obtain a sample of the product for testing to confirm strength and safety from an approved testing agency.
- Demonstrate how to dilute a Cannabis solution to the appropriate strengths based on the Certificate of Analysis (COA) obtained from the testing agency.
- Demonstrate how to prepare various Cannabis-based dosage forms, including innovative edibles, tinctures (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), oral drops, and external preparations such as creams and soaps.
